The Easter Vigil 2011
April 23, 2011
The Blessing of the Fire
And
Lighting of the Easter Candle
During the procession: Christ our Light! Thanks be to God.
The Easter Proclamation
Cantor: Rejoice, Heavenly powers, sing, choirs of angels!
Exult all creation around God’s throne!
Jesus Christ, our King is risen.
Sound the trumpet of salvation!
Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendour,
radiant in the brightness of your King.
Christ has conquered! Glory fills you.
Darkness vanishes for ever!
Choir: Rejoice, O Mother Church! Exult in glory!
The Risen Saviour shines on you.
Let this place resound with joy,
echoing the mighty song of all God’s people!
Priest: My dearest friends, standing with me in this holy light,
join me in asking God for mercy,
that he may give his unworthy ministers
grace to sing his Easter praises.
The Lord be with you: and also with you.
Lift up your hearts: We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is truly right that with full hearts and minds & voices
we should praise the unseen God, the all-powerful Father,
& his only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
For Christ has ransomed us with his blood,
& paid for us the price of Adam’s sin to our eternal Father.
This is our Passover feast when Christ the true Lamb
is slain whose blood consecrates the homes of all believers.
This is the night:
This is the night when first you saved our fathers;
you saved the people of Israel from slavery and led them dry-shod through the sea.
This is the night!
This is the night when the pillar of fire destroyed the darkness of sin.
This is the night!
This is the night when Christians everywhere,
washed clean of sin and freed from all defilement,
are restored to grace and grow together in holiness.
This is the night!
This is the night when Jesus Christ broke the chains of death
and rose triumphant from the grave.
What good would life have been to us, had Christ not come as our redeemer?
Father, how wonderful your care for us! How boundless your merciful love!
To ransom a slave you gave away your Son.
O Happy Fault!
O Happy fault, O necessary Sin of Adam which gained for us to great a Redeemer!
Most blessed of all nights!
Most Blessed of all nights,
chosen by God to see Christ rising from the dead.
Priest
Of this night scripture says: “The night will be as clear as day, it will become my light, my joy.”
The power of this night dispels all evil, washes guilt away,
restores lost innocence, brings mourners joy;
it casts out hatred, brings us peace, and humbles earthly pride.
Night truly blessed!
Night truly blessed !
when heaven is wed to earth and man is reconciled with God.
Priest
Therefore, Heavenly Father, in the joy of this night receive our evening sacrifice of praise,
your church’s solemn off’ring.
Accept this Easter candle, a flame divided but undimmed,
a pillar of fire that glows to the honour of God.
Let it mingle with the lights of heaven
and continue bravely burning to dispel the darkness of this night.
May the morning star which never sets
find this flame still burning.
Christ that morning star, who came back from the dead,
and shed his peaceful light on all mankind,
your son who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Amen. Amen.
We sit for The Liturgy of the Word
1st Reading Genesis 1:1-2:2
Psalm 32: He fills the earth with his love.
The word of the Lord is faithful, we trust him in all he does.
The Lord loves justice, justice and fairness, he fills the earth,
he fills the earth, he fills the earth with his love.
He fills the earth … .
By his word the heav’ns were made; the breath of his mouth made the stars.
The Lord looks on those, those who revere him, on those who hope,
on those who hope, on those who hope in his love.
He fills the earth . . . . .
And so we await the Lord, the Lord is our help and shield.
We trust that your love will be upon us, we place all our hope,
we place all our hope, we place all our hope in you.
He fills … .
Prayer
2nd Reading: from the Book of Exodus 14:15 – 15:1
The Canticle of Moses
I will sing to the Lord ! Glorious his triumph. I will sing to the Lord.
I will sing to the Lord, glorious his triumph!
Horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.
The Lord is my strength, my song, my salvation.
This is my God, and I extol him! My father’s God and I give him praise.
I will sing to the Lord ! Glorious his triumph. I will sing to the Lord.
The Lord is a warrior! The Lord is his name!
The chariots of Pharaoh he hurled into the sea;
the flower of his army is drowned in the sea!
The deeps hide them, they sank like a stone!
I will sing to the Lord ! Glorious his triumph. I will sing to the Lord.
Your right hand, Lord, glorious in its power,
your right hand, Lord, has shattered the foe.
In the greatness of your glory you crushed the foe!
I will sing to the Lord ! Glorious his triumph. I will sing to the Lord.
You will lead them and plant them on your holy mountain,
the place, O Lord, where you have made your home,
the sanctuary which your hands have made.
The Lord will reign for ever and ever!
The Lord will reign for ever.
I will sing to the Lord, glorious his triumph! I will sing to the Lord
Prayer
3rd Reading: from the Prophet Isaiah 55: 1-11
The first part of the passage ( verses 1-5) is read, then the choir sings:
Seek the Lord while he is still to be founf.
Call to him while he is still near.
Let the wicked man abandon his way, the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn back to the Lord
who will take pity on him,
to our God who is ruich in forgiving.
For my ways are not your ways, my thoughts not your thoughts -
it is the Lord who speaks.
Yes, the heavens are as far above earth
as my ways are above your ways,
my thoughts above your thoughts.
Yes, as rain and snow come down from the heavens
and do not return without watering the earth,
Giving it yield for growth, seed for sowing, bread for eatring,
so the word of my mouth does not return to me empty
without carrying out my will
and succeeding in what it was sent to do.
Prayer
4th Reading: Baruch 3: 9-15. 32 – 4:4
Psalm 18 Lord, you have the message of eternal life .
The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul.
The rule of the Lord is to be trusted, it gives wisdom to the simple.
Lord, you have the message of eternal life.
The precepts of the Lord are right, they gladden the heart
The command of the Lord is clear; it gives light to the eyes.
Lord, you have the message of eternal life.
The fear of the Lord is holy, abiding forever;
The decrees of the Lord are truth, and all of them just.
Lord, you have the message of eternal life .
They are more to be desired than gold, than the purest of gold;
and sweeter are they than honey, than honey from the comb.
Lord, you have the message of eternal life.

Blest be the Lord the God of Israel,who came to us; and brought us back from sin.
God raised for us a Saviour who is mighty;his Saviour-Son from David’s house and line.
God promised this through holy men and women who spoke for him down through the mists of time.
The Saviour comes to free us from our foes from evil hands, from those who wish us ill.
So God’s great love for all his chosen people is thus fulfilled; in these our present times.

Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son,
endless is the victory, thou o’er death hast won.
Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,
kept the folded grave clothes, where Thy body lay.
Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son,
endless is the victory, thou o’er death hast won.
Lo, Jesus meets, risen from the tomb;
lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom.
Let the church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing,
for her Lord is living, death hath lost its sting.
No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life;
life is nought without Thee: aid us in our strife;
make us more than conquerors, through Thy deathless love:
bring us safe through Jordan to Thy home above.

Ecumenical Evening Prayer Wednesday of Holy Week 2011
April 20, 2011
Evening Prayer For the Wednesday of Holy Week
with Ibrox Parish Church, Kinning Park Parish Church and St Leo the Great Parish.
We sing the Canticle from the Letter to the Philippians: 2: 6-11
Though Jesus Christ was in the form of God,
he did not count such equality to be grasped.
Instead, he freely emptied out himself,
and took the form of a servant, was born like us.
In human form he chose humility,
and gave himself up to dying upon a cross.
Because of this our God exalted him,
and raised him gave him a name above every name.
At Jesus’ name now every knee should bow
be they in heav’n or on earth or creation’s depths.
Welcome
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be
world without end.
Amen.

Seek the Lord while he is still to be found,
call to him while he is still near.
Let the wicked man abandon his way, the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn back to the Lord who will take pity on him,
to our God who is rich in forgiving;
for my thoughts are not your thoughts, my ways not your ways;
- it is the Lord who speaks.
Yes, the heavens are as far above the earth
as my ways are above your ways,
my thoughts above your thoughts.
Yes, as rain and snow come down from the heavens
and do not return without watering the earth,
giving it yield and growth, seed for sowing, bread for eating,
so the word that goes from my mouth
does not return to me empty,
without carrying out my will,
and succeeding in what it was sent to do.
We sing Psalm 62 (Iona Version):
O God, you are my God alone . . . .
Let us pray:
Loving God,
You strengthened and guided our ancestors
in their search for you.
Jesus has shown us how to live in the dignity of your children
Even when we are conscious of our human frailty.
Be with us this week,
When we remember what he did for us.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
A Reading from Ephesians 4:32 – 5:2
Be kind and compassionate to one another,
forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children
and walk in the way of love,
just as Christ loved us
and gave himself up for us
as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Canticle from the Letter to the Colossians
Let’s give thanks to God our Father who allows us all to share
in the joys of all the saints who live in light, as God’s true heirs.
God has brought us out of darkness to the kingdom of his Son:
Jesus is God’s most beloved who redeems us from our sin.
Jesus shows the face of God who can’t be grasped by human eye.
Jesus is the first expression of God’s love that unifies.
For in Jesus God created all we see and understand:
all in Jesus, all for Jesus, Jesus forms creation’s plan.
Jesus is the head of God’s Church; Jesus first in all the earth;
first to rise beyond the grave and first in ev’rything of worth;
for in Jesus all the fullness of our God has taken flesh;
heav’n and earth will come to wholeness through the saving blood of Christ.

Annual Ecumenical Christian Passover 2011in Ibrox Parish Church
April 17, 2011
| There was a most successful gathering in Ibrox Parish Church last Thursday as St Leo’s Parish, Kinning Park Parish and Ibrox Parish celebrated the annual ‘ecumenical Christian Passover’ for 2011. Rev Elizabeth Spence led us through a service punctuated with hymns and psalms, prayer, nibbles of Matzos and herbs and glasses of red wine and together we achieved a sense of the ageless ritual which we were celebrating. It was both prayerful and yet informally familial, evocative of the grandeur of the history of salvation and at the same time warmly alive and of the present.The music began with ‘All people’ and included ‘The Canticle of Moses, the Taize ‘Jesus Remember me’ ‘Behold the amazing gift of love’, the chorus of ‘Blessed be God’ (Nazareth), and Crimond and there was a lovely blessing taken from the 2nd century ‘Didache’ or ‘Teaching of the Twelve Apostles (as it is called) |
Ecumenical Morning Prayer for Lent April 2011
April 16, 2011
Morning Prayer for Lent
St Leo the Great and Sherbrook – St Gilbert’s
5th Thursday of Lent 14th April 2011
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
Prayer
‘Lord Jesus, on a cross,
you gave your life for us and all humanity;
you took the pain of death and by it cleansed us from all sin.
Give us grace to live worthily of your sacrifice
that we, and all who would follow you,
should by our lives, show your love
for the broken and the hurt.
Amen
Psalm 31: 9-16
Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;
My eyes grow weak with sorrow,
My soul and body with grief.
My life is consumed by anguish
And my years by groaning;
My strength fails because of my affliction,
And my bones grow weak.
Because of all my enemies
I am the utter contempt of my neighbours
and an object of dread to my closest friends -
those who see me in the streets flee from me.
I am forgotten as though I were dead;
I have become like broken pottery.
For I hear many whispering,
“Terror on every side!”
They conspire against me
and plot to take my life.
But I trust in you, Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”
My times are in your hands;
deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
from those who pursue me.
Let your face shine on your servant;
save me in your unfailing love.
Scripture Reading: Philippians 1: 1-11
Reflection:
Prayers of Intercession and Lord’s Prayer
Gracious Lord, give us the grace we need to follow in the way of the cross:
keep us faithful, dear Lord.
Strengthen us, Lord, for service in your name that all humanity might know your love.
Let us praise the Lord.
May the message of Christ’s Passion bring liberation to those who struggle in this world.
Bring peace, O God.
When the weak, the sick and the dying cry out in their pain:
May we in your name bring healing.
Lead us in the way of life that we might at the last come into your presence:
With those who have gone before us in faith.
Our Father . . . . . .
hymn
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!
Prayer:
Grant us grace this day, O God,
To serve you in all things
That in so doing we might continuously
Offer praise to you.
Amen.

Ps 21: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
All who see me deride me. They curl their lips, they toss their heads.
“He trusted in the Lord, let him save him, let him release him if this is his friend.” My God …..
Many dogs have surrounded me; a band of the wicked beset me.
They tear holes in my hands and my feet; and I can count ev’ry one of my bones. My God, …..
They divided my clothing among them. They cast lots for my robe.
O Lord do not leave me alone; you are my strength, make haste to help me. My God, my God…
I will tell of your name to my brethren and praise you when they are assembled.
You who fear the Lord, give him praise; all sons of Jacob, give him glory. My God…

but God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above all names.
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.

In human form he chose humility, and gave himself up to dying upon a cross.
Because of this our God exalted him, and raised him, gave him a name above every name.
At Jesus’ name now every knee should bow, be they in heav’n or on earth or creation’s depths.

It was both prayerful and yet informally familial, evocative of the grandeur of the history of salvation and at the same time warmly alive and of the present. |

Entry:
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I’m found was blind, but now I see.

How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John
The Washing of the Feet
In the upper room Jesus and his friends
met to celebrate their final supper.
Jesus took a bowl, knelt to wash their feet, told them:
You must do for others as I do for you.
You must do for others as I do for you.
Peter was annoyed: “This will never do!
You as master should not play the servant!”
Jesus took a towel,, knelt to dry their feet, told them:
You must do for others as I do for you.
You must do for others as I do for you.
We are here today, learning as we pray,
that the master chose to be the Servant.
We, like him, will see God in all we meet: truly
You must do for others as I do for you.
You must do for others as I do for you.
Liturgy of the Eucharist

For a few moments, We, who are aware of the support given us by so
many, pray for those we love and those we know to be in need.
Psalm 114
I walk with you, my Lord. Each day be at my side.
I love the Lord for he has heard my cry; with love he hears my voice.
And when I call to him in need, he listens to my prayer.
I walk with you, my Lord. Each day be at my side.
The snares of death have threatened me, O Lord, with sorrow and distress.
Deliver me, O Lord my God! In you I put my trust.
I walk with you, my Lord. Each day be at my side.
How kind and gracious is the Lord our God! Compassionate his ways!
The Lord protects the simple heart, the poor and weak he saves.
I walk with you, my Lord. Each day be at my side.
Since he has kept my eyes from bitter tears and saved my soul from death,
Now I will walk the path of life with you, Lord, at my side.
I walk with you, my Lord. Each day be at my side.
Our Father . . . . . .
All glory to God the Father of all, To the Son and the Spirit give praise.
O circle us now with love and with peace.
Our strength and our guide, Lord, we pray.
We have nothing to fear when you are so near.
You are King of the night and the day.
All glory to God the Father of all, To the Son and the Spirit give praise.
I ask you, my God, to bless and protect
the fam’ly and friends that I love.
Enfold us in love, surround us with peace;
Be our strength and our light and our life.
All glory to God the Father of all, To the Son and the Spirit give praise.

4th week of Lent
Sherbrooke St Gilbert’s and St Leo the Great
O God, come to my aid:
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.
Amen.
HYMN
O Sacred Head, sore wounded, with grief and shame weighed down!
O kingly head, surrounded with thorns, thine only crown.
How pale art thou with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn!
How does that visage languish which once was bright as morn.
What language shall I borrow to praise thee heavenly friend,
for this thy dying sorrow, thy piety without end?
O make me thine forever, and should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee.
Let us pray
Lord Jesus, early in the morning of your resurrection,
you made your love known
and brought the first light of dawn to those who dwell in darkness.
Your death has opened a path for us.
Do not enter into judgment with your servants;
let your Holy Spirit guide us together into the land of justice.
At daybreak, be merciful to me, O Lord.
Amen
The Seven Last Words
Forgive them, Father dear; they know not what they do.
Forgive all those who for my sake forgive as I forgive. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Let us pray
God our Father, great builder of the heavenly Jerusalem,
you know the number of the stars and call each of them by name.
Heal hearts that are broken, gather together those who have been scattered,
and enrich us all from the plenitude of your eternal wisdom.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
READING 1 Kings 8:51-53a
We are your people and your inheritance, O Lord.
May your eyes be open to the petition of your servant
and to the petition of your people, Israel.
Hear us whenever we call upon you,
because you have set us apart
among all the peoples of the earth for your inheritance.
A reflective Silence during which Grace will play the harp for us
CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH: From Luke 1:68 – 79 The Iona Benedictus
INTERCESSIONS
God has revealed himself in Christ. Let us praise his goodness, and ask him from our hearts:
Remember us, Lord, for we are your children.
Teach us to enter more deeply into the mystery of the Church,
that it may be more effective for ourselves and for the world as the sacrament of salvation.
Remember us, Lord, for we are your children.
Lover of mankind, inspire us to work for human progress,
seeking to spread your kingdom in all we do.
Remember us, Lord, for we are your children.
May our hearts thirst for Christ, the fountain of living water.
Remember us, Lord, for we are your children.
Forgive us our sins,
and direct our steps into the ways of justice and sincerity.
Remember us, Lord, for we are your children.
Our Father who art in heaven . . . . .
Concluding Prayer
Merciful Father,
may the penance of our Lenten observance
make us your obedient people.
May the love within us be seen in what we do
and lead us to the joy of Easter.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
DISMISSAL
May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.
– Amen.

1st reading: 1 Samuel 16:1.6-7. 10-13
Psalm 22: His goodness shall follow me always to the end of my days.
The Lord is my shepherd: there is nothing I shall want
Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me to revive my drooping spirits.
His goodness will follow me always to the end of my days.
In truth he guides me along the right path,
If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and staff, with these you give me comfort.
His goodness will follow me always to the end of my days.
You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil, my cup is overflowing.
His goodness will follow me always to the end of my days.
Goodness and kindness shall surely follow me all the days of my life.
In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell for ever, forever and ever.
His goodness will follow me always to the end of my days.
Or
Crimond: Psalm 22
The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want. He makes me down to lie
in pastures green. He leadeth me the quiet waters by.
My soul he doth restore again, and me to walk doth make
within the paths of righteousness, e’en for his own name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale, yet will I fear none ill.
For thou art with me, and thy rod and staff me comfort still.
My table thou hast furnished in presence of my foes,
my head thou dost with oil anoint, and my cup overflows.
Goodness and mercy all my life shall surely follow me.
And in God’s house for evermore my dwelling -place shall be.
