The Stations of the Cross

The First Station: Jesus is condemned to death

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you,
because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Jesus was unjustly condemned. He accepted this out of love for us.
Help us, Lord, to accept what we find hard in life,
And to place our trust in your promise that we will never be without your presence.

 Pause

 Second Station: Jesus takes up his cross

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross:
You have redeemed the world.

With great courage Jesus took up his cross.
Help us, Lord, to follow your example and walk with you through life.

 Pause

 Third Station:  Jesus falls the first time

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross:
You have redeemed the world.

 Jesus became like us in human weakness and frailty.
Support us Lord when we stumble and fall.

 Pause

Fourth Station: Jesus meets his mother

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . . .

 Mary your mother was always there for you.
Help us to be there for our friends and families in all difficult times,
And to show them your compassion.

Pause

Fifth Station: Simon of Cyrene helps carry the cross

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . . .

 Simon shared the weight of your cross as you went forward to lay down your life for us all.
Be with us as we strive to reach out to those in need in our world today.

Pause

Sixth Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . .

The compassion of Veronica for you in your hour of need
is a pale reflection of your great compassion for all of us.
Help us to show your love in deeds of kindness to all we meet.

Pause

Seventh Station: Jesus falls the second time

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . .

 With great courage you continued and went forward on the road to Calvary.
Help us to be strong and to draw courage from you when we meet life’s problems.

Pause

Eighth Station:  Jesus speaks to the women of Jerusalem

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . . .

 Jesus was aware of the depth of grief these women showed for him,
and he in turn showed great concern for their future and the future of their children.
When we are in pain, help us to look outward and be open to the pain of  others.

Pause

Ninth Station: Jesus falls the third time

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . .

When all seemed lost, Jesus persevered in doing the will of the Father,
and drew strength from his Father.
Teach us how to draw strength from you when life and all the problems of our world seem too much for us.

Pause

Tenth Station: Jesus is stripped of his garments

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . . .

 Every possession was taken from Jesus, and his great heart of love was revealed to us.
Help us to have poverty of spirit that we may see your love everywhere.

Pause

Eleventh Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . . .

 Nailed to the cross, Jesus freely offered his life for us and for the whole human race.
When we feel constrained and trapped by fears in life, give us the grace of inner freedom
which sees your hand at work in all the circumstances in which we find ourselves.

Pause

 Twelfth Station: Jesus dies on the cross

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you . . . . . .

 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last and sent forth the Spirit.
Give us great hope and trust that nothing can separate us from your love,
not even death itself.

Pause

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

 Accepting death upon the cross:
You gained us life.

Thirteenth Station:  Jesus is taken down from the cross

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . . . . .

 The small group of followers gave you in death to Mary, your Mother.

May she gather us and form us into your faithful disciples,
ready to witness to your goodness and love.

Pause

 Fourteenth Station: Jesus is laid in the tomb

 We praise you, O Christ, and we bless you  . . . . . .

 In the stillness of the tomb, we keep watch for signs of your presence.
In the noise and distraction of our daily lives, help us make time and space to recognise you.

Pause

 Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, naught be all else to me save that thou art;
thou my best thought in the day and night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

 Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
thou my great Father, and I thy true son; thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

 High King of heaven when battle is done, grant heaven’s joy to me, O bright heaven’s sun;

Psalm 32  He fills the earth with his love.

The word of the Lord is faithful, we trust him in all he does.

he fills the earth, he fills the earth with his love. He fills the earth with his love.

 By his word the heav’ns were made; the breath of his mouth made the stars.
The Lord looks on those, those who revere him, on those who hope,
on those who hope, on those who hope in his love. He fills the earth with his love.

 And so we await the Lord, the Lord is our help and shield.
We trust that your love will be upon us, we place all our hope,

Ecumenical and Lenten Morning Prayer for St Patrick’s Day

March 16, 2011

Sherbrooke St Gilbert’s and St Leo the Great

 Morning Prayer St Patrick’s Day 2011

Christ be beside me, Christ be before me, Christ be behind me, King of my heart,
Christ be within me, Christ be below me,  Christ be above me, never to part.

 Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand, Christ  all around me, shield in the strife.
Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my sitting, Christ in my rising, light of my life.

 Christ be in all hearts thinking about me. Christ be in all tongues telling of me.
Christ be the vision in eyes that see me, in ears that hear me, Christ ever be.
O God, come to our aid:    O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

 Psalm 26 is one of the favourite psalms of Lent, and as we pray it today we might remember the boy, Patrick, stolen into slavery,
who had to deepen his sense of trust in God, and who like David the psalmist, was saved and entrusted in turn with his own great mission

 Psalm 26: The Lord is my light, the Lord is my help.

 The Lord is my light and my help; of whom then, need I be afraid?
The strength in my life is the Lord, before whom shall I ever tremble?
The Lord is my light, the Lord is my help.

 One thing I ask of the Lord – to live with him for evermore.
O Lord, hear my voice, in mercy answer!   I seek you, dismiss not your servant.
The Lord is my light, the Lord is my help.

 Glory to God the Father, glory to the Son,
Glory to God the Holy Spirit  now and for ever. Amen.
The Lord is my light, the Lord is my help.

 Let us pray

Loving Father,

You heard the prayers of St Patrick,
And you gave him the courage and vision to respond to your call.
Let us who honour his memory
Be generous in our service of you and our neighbour.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

 Another  song of the early church, taken from the Letter to the Philippians (2:6-11),  is particularly suitable for Lent

 Tune: My God Loves Me

 Though  Jesus Christ was in the form of God,
he did not count such equality to be grasped.

Instead, he freely emptied out himself,
and took the form of a servant, was born like us.

 In human form he chose humility,
and gave himself up to dying upon a cross.

Because of this our God exalted him, and raised him
gave him a name above every name.

 At Jesus’ name now every knee should bow
be they in heav’n or on earth or creation’s depths.

 All glory be to God, the Three in One,
the Father, Son, Holy Spirit for ever more.

Patrick wrote to Coroticus appealing to him to release captives and including this passage below:

 A short Reading from St Patrick’s Letter to Coroticus

 “O most dear ones, I can see you
Beginning the journey to the land
Where there is no night nor sorrow nor death…
You shall reign with the apostles and prophets and martyrs.
You shall seize the everlasting kingdoms,
As Christ promised when he said:
‘they shall come from the east and the west
and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob
in the kingdom of heaven.”

  Short pause

 A reading from the Prophet Jeremiah 1:4-9

 Now the word of the Lord came to me saying,
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.”
But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, `I am only a youth’;
for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,
and whatever I command you, you shall speak.
Be not afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.”
Then the Lord put forth his hand and touched my mouth;
and the Lord said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.

Benedictus verse 4:  tune: Finlandia

 And you, my child, are favoured by the Most High:
you shall be called a prophet of our God.
You shall go forth as herald from the Lord,
and shall prepare the ways on which he comes.
You shall make known the wonders of salvation
to everyone called chosen by the Lord.

 Introit

He will call to me and I shall answer
With freedom and honour and length of days;
He will call to me.  He will call to me.

 All you sheltered by the Most High, who live in Almighty God’s shadow,
Say to the Lord, “my Refuge, my stronghold, my rock in whom I trust.”

 He will call to me and I shall answer
With freedom and  honour  and length of days;
He will call to me.  He will call to me.

 Liturgy of the Word

 1st Reading: from the Book of Joel

 Psalm 50:  A pure heart create for me, O God.

Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, in compassion blot out my offence.
O wash me more and more from my guilt, and cleanse me from my sin.
A pure heart create for me, O God.

 My offences truly I know them; my sin is always before me.
Against you alone have I sinned.  What is evil in your sight I have done.
A pure heart create for me, O God.

 Create for me a heart that is pure, put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your holy spirit.
A pure heart create for me, O God.

 With a spirit of fervour sustain me.  Give again the joy of your help,
O Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise.
A pure heart create for me, O God.

A reading from the 2nd Letter to the Corinthians 5:20 – 6:2

 Gospel Verse

 Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.
Not by bread alone do we live,
but by every word from the mouth of God;
Not by bread alone, not by bread alone, not by bread alone.
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. . . . .

 Gospel

 Blessing and Distribution of Ashes

 Kyrie, eleison.   Kyrie, eleison.   Kyrie, eleison.
Christe . eleison . Christe . eleison. . Christe . eleison . . . . .
Kyrie, eleison . . . Kyrie, eleison.   Kyrie, eleison.

  From the Canticle of Ezechiel 36 (tune: Slane)

Hear me my people, I will call you back home From the nations and countries in which you now roam;
the place where I’ll lead you is where you’ll be free, for you are my chosen; your God I shall be.

 Hear me, my people, I will sprinkle you all with fresh water to cleanse you from sin and its thrall;
each falsehood and idol I’ll teach you to see;  for you are my chosen; your God I shall be.

 Hear me, my people, feel the new heart I give the new spirit and guidance for how you might live;
a heart made of flesh, not of stone , is the key for you are my chosen; your God I shall be.

 Liturgy of the Eucharist

 Jesus, Remember me when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, Remember me when you come into your kingdom.

 Sanctus . . . . .

 Memorial: Suffering for us you set us free, Rising you gave us life.
You are the  saviour,   you are the saviour, saviour of the world.

This is the bread come down from heaven;
Whoever eats of it will never die.
This is the cup of eternal life;
Whoever drinks of it will live for ever.

 Be still and know that I am God (3).
I am the Lord that healeth thee (3)
In thee, O Lord, I put my trust (3).

 Saint Peter Chrysologus (c.406-450), Bishop of Ravenna, Doctor of the Church wrote:

‘My dear brethren, today we set out on the great Lenten journey. So let us take our food and drink along in our boat, putting onto the chest the abundant mercy we shall need. For our fasting is a hungry one, our fasting is a thirsty one if it isn’t sustained by goodness and refreshed by mercy. Our fasting will be cold, our fasting will flag if the fleece of almsgiving doesn’t clothe it, if the garment of compassion does not wrap it around.’

 Introit:   You alone are holy, and you alone are Lord,
and you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ our Lord.

In you, O Lord, I take refuge.  Let me never be put to shame.
In your justice rescue me, hear me, pay heed to me and save me.

St Gregory Gloria:  Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth….

Reading I: Deuteronomy 11:18, 26-28, 32

Psalm 30

In you, O Lord, I take refuge, let me never be put to shame.
In your justice set me free, it is you who will redeem me, Lord.
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

In the face of all my foes, I am a reproach,
an object of scorn to my neighbours and of fear to my friends.
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

Those who see me in the street run far away from me.
I am like a dead man, forgotten in men’s hearts, like a thing thrown away.
Into your hands, O Lord….

But as for me I trust in you, Lord, I say, “You are my God”
My life is in your hands deliver me from the hands of those who hate me.
Into your hands, O Lord. . ..

Let your face shine on your servant, and save me in your love.
Be strong, let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the Lord.
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
