Morning Prayer with Mass: December 31st 2010
December 31, 2010
Christmastide : 31st December 2010
Morning Prayer with Mass
The snow lay on the ground, the stars shone bright
When Christ our Lord was born on Christmas night.
When Christ our Lord was born on Christmas night.
‘Twas Mary, daughter pure of holy Anne
That brought into this world The God made man
That brought into this world The God made man
She laid Him in a stall at Bethlehem.
The ass and oxen shared the roof with them.
The ass and oxen shared the roof with them.
Saint Joseph, too, was by to tend the Child
To guard him, and protect his mother mild.
To guard him, and protect his mother mild.
The angels hovered round and sung this song
Venite adoremus Dominum. Venite adoremus Dominum.
O God, come to our aid: O Lord, make haste to help us . . .
We sit for the psalm:
Psalm 62: O God, you are my God, for you I long.
O God, you are my God, for you I long, for you my soul is thirsting.
My body pines for you, my God, like a dry weary land without water.
O God, you are my God, for you I long.
I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and glory,
for your love is better than life itself; my lips will speak your praise.
O God, you are my God, for you I long.
On you I muse throughout the night, on my bed I remember you,
for you have been my refuge and your right hand holds me fast.
O God, you are my God, for you I long.
Glory to the Father, glory to the Son, Glory to the Holy Spirit
now and for ever. Amen,
O God, you are my God, for you I long.
Let us pray:
Lord, as the psalmist indicates
we long for what is good,
but our hearts are restless till they rest in you.
Sustain us in our quest for the beauty and completeness,
and the peace of your presence.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
To welcome the Gospel we sing
Alleluia, alleluia. At various times in the past, and in various different ways,
God spoke to our ancestors, God spoke to the prophets.
Now in our time he has spoken through his Son. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
Intercessions
With humble confidence let us pray to Christ our Lord, whose glory appeared in the sight of all: – Lord, take pity on us.
Christ, you were born of the Father before time began, splendour of the Father’s glory, image of the Father’s being. By your word you keep all things in being: we beg you, by your Gospel make this day live. – Lord, take pity on us.
Christ, you were born into this world in the fulness of time, born for the salvation of the human race, born to bring freedom to every created thing: we beg you, give freedom to all. - Lord, take pity on us.
Christ, Son of one substance with the Father, Christ begotten before the creation of light itself, Christ born in Bethlehem in fulfilment of the Scriptures: we beg you, fill your Church with the light of poverty and detachment from material things. – Lord, take pity on us.
Christ, God and man, David’s Lord and David’s son, fulfilment of prophecies: we beg you, let the whole Israel recognise you as its Messiah. – Lord, take pity on us.
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
the little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
and stand by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
lose by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
and fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.
Sanctus – Memorial – Doxology
Agnus Dei
Communion:
Whoever eats this bread and drinks this cup
Will live in me and I in him, says the Lord, says the Lord.
After Communion:
The Saviour comes to free us from our foes,
from from evil hands, from those who wish us ill.
So God’s great love for all his chosen people
is thus fulfilled; in these our present times.
God’s sacred oath his covenant most holy
is called to mind, his promises made true.
At the end of the year we thank God for his goodness experienced in our lives and in the lives of those we love, and we ask for God’s strength for all who are experiencing hardship or difficulty of any kind – we sing some of the words of the Te Deum, written (it is said) by St Ambrose, sung initially (probably) at the Baptism of St Augustine in Milan in the 4th century and sung on important occasions ever since – including the end of the year.
God, we praise you! God, we bless you! God, we name you sovereign Lord! . . . . . . .

Ecumenical Morning Prayer: 4th week of Advent 2010
December 28, 2010
Sherbrooke – St Gilbert’s and St Leo the Great Ecumenical Morning Prayer 4th Week of Advent 2010
Once our forebears watched and waited (Advent Carol (c) Michael Joncas 2010. Tune: Once in David’s Royal City)
O God, come to our aid: O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end.
Amen.
We sit for the canticle :
We bless the God and Father : Canticle Ephesians 1: 3-10 (c) Stephen E Smyth with music (c) Gerry Fitzpatrick
We bless the God and Father of Jesus for he has blessed us freely in Christ.
He chose to lavish spiritual blessings from highest heaven.
All this through Christ.
Long before founding all of creation, God made his plan and chose us in Christ,
that we be holy, blameless and loving, children adopted.
All this through Christ.
God’s will is always that we might love him, source of all graces, witnessed in Christ;
love manifested, gift of redemption, pardon for sinners.
All this through Christ.
Out of his wisdom God chose to tell us his loving purpose, set forth in Christ:
time has its fullness, God and creation will be united.
All this through Christ.
Short reading: Jeremiah 30: 21, 22
The Lord says this: Their prince will come from Jacob, their ruler come from their own people.
I will let him come freely into my presence and he can come close to me.
And you shall be my people and I will be your God.
Reflection
Benedictus: Now bless the God of Israel (Words John Bell (c) WGRG)
Intercessions
Christ our redeemer is coming to bring us his grace and restore us to righteousness.
Full of rejoicing let us say once again: – Come, Lord Jesus.
The prophets of old foretold your birth in the flesh: strengthen the virtues that are born within us.
– Come, Lord Jesus.
Give us this gift: that, proclaiming your good news, we may attain salvation in you.
– Come, Lord Jesus. –
You came to heal the contrite of heart: we are feeble, give us strength.
– Come, Lord Jesus. –
You deigned to come to reconcile the world to yourself:
when you come again in judgement, free us from pain and punishment.
– Come, Lord Jesus.
Our Father . . . . . .
Almighty God, now that the birthday of your Son as man is drawing near,
we pray that your eternal Word, who took flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary
and came to dwell among us,
will show your unworthy people the greatness of his love and mercy.
He lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen.
May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm;
and may he lead us to eternal life.

The Preparation of Gifts
While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground,
the Angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around.
”Fear not”, said he, (for mighty dread has seized their troubled mind)
“Glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind.
“To you in David’s town this day is born of David’s line
a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; and this shall be the sign:
”The heavenly Babe you there shall find to human view displayed,
all meanly wrapped in swathing bands, and in a manger laid.”
”All glory be to God on high, and on the earth be peace,
goodwill henceforth from heaven to men begin and never cease.”

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. (2)

| The 3rd Advent CandleAs we light the 4th Advent Candle we recall the obstinacy of King Ahaz refusing to recognise the signs of the times, and the wisdom of Isaiah giving hope in the name of God. The Preparation of Gifts
A sign is seen in heaven a maiden-mother fair; her mantle is the sunlight, and stars adorn her hair.
The maiden’s name is Mary, in love she brings to birth the Lord of all the ages, the King of all the earth.
Like moonlight on the hilltops she shines on all below, like sunlight on the mountains her child outshines the snow,
O Mary, Queen of mothers, still smile on young and old; bless hearth and home and harvest, bless farm and field and fold.
Pray, Mother, Queen in glory, before the Father’s throne; praise God’s eternal Wisdom, the Child who is your own;
rejoice in God the Spirit, whose power let you conceive the Child of Eden’s promise, O new and sinless Eve.

Ecumenical Morning Prayer 3rd Week Advent 2010
December 18, 2010
Morning Prayer:
The 3rd Week of Advent 18th December 2010
St Leo the Great and Sherbrooke – St Gilbert’s
O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
from depths of hell thy people save, and give them vic’try o’er the grave.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, thou dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadows put to flight;
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, thou key of David, come and open wide our heavenly home;
make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, O come, thou Lord of might, who to thy tribes on Sinai’s height
in ancient times didst give the Law in cloud and majesty and awe.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
Collect for the Day: (said by all)
Almighty God,
You have made us and all things to serve you,
Now prepare the world for your rule.
Come quickly to save us,
So that wars and violence shall end,
and your children may live in peace,
Honouring one another with justice and love,
Through Jesus Christ
Who lives in power with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and forever.
Amen.
Canticle: Tell out my soul (Timothy Dudley-Smith)
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 11:1-10
Reflection:
The first theme of Advent, given to us in the traditional Introit of the 1st Sunday (from Ps 24), is ‘I lift my soul to you, I trust you, Lord my God. No-one who waits on you will ever be put to shame. Teach me how to live, Lord, show me the way . . . . . ..’ Advent is a time for renewing our confidence in God’s love and care for us, for remembering that God doesn’t change his mind about us, or give up on us, and that he hasn’t walked away from us. It is a time for accepting our humanity with all our limitations, to try again to be open to the guidance of God, and so to ‘lift up my soul’ with confidence.
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the Holy Catholic church;
the Communion of Saints;
the Forgiveness of Sins;
the Resurrection of the Body;
and the Life Everlasting.
Amen.
Prayers of Intercession
Almighty God, in this season give us grace to wait for your message, that we might faithfully serve you.
Lord, show us your way.
Help us to tell this wonderful; story of Coming, that others might hear the Good News.
Lord, give us voice to proclaim your love.
Many are struggling with health issues or personal worries, O God, help them to experience your peace.
Use us, O God, to bring your peace.
There is excitement in the voices of the young as they prepare to celebrate.
May we help them to understand your gift for them and all humanity.
The Lord’s Prayer:Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Ecumenical Morning Worship for Advent: Week 1 2010

St Leo the Great and Sherbrooke – St Gilbert’s
Ecumenical Morning Prayer
in Sherbrooke- St Gilbert’s
December 2nd
O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
from depths of hell thy people save, and give them vic’try o’er the grave.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, thou dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadows put to flight;
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
Prayer:
Psalm / Canticle (Psalm 72: 1-7, 17-19)
Endow the king with your justice, O God,
the royal son with your righteousness.
May he judge your people in righteousness,
your afflicted ones with justice.
May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
the hills the fruit of righteousness.
May he defend the afflicted among the people
and save the children of the needy;
may he crush the oppressor.
May he endure as long as the sun,
as long as the moon, through all generations.
May he be like rain falling on a mown field,
like showers watering the earth.
In his days may the righteous flourish
and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.
May his name endure for ever;
may it continue as long as the sun.
Then all nations will be blessed through him,
and they will call him blessed.
Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,
who alone does marvellous deeds.
Praise be to his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory.
Amen and Amen.
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 4:2-6
Reflection
Prayers and the Lord’s Prayer
For all people of faith, we pray, that in their daily living they may glorify you.
God, enable us to be your people.
That in this season of Advent we may prepare ourselves for the coming again of your holy Son as our Saviour.
God, give us grace to prepare our hearts to receive him anew.
For the sick in body and mind we pray and for those who bring healing and comfort.
God, let us be instruments of your healing love.
Lord God, for the powerbrokers of this world, we ask humility of heart and purpose.
God, may they be humble servants of all people.
For ourselves, our families, and the community of faith in this part of Glasgow.
God, strengthen us to love you more dearly.
Morning hymn:
Thy kingdom come! on bended knee
The passing ages pray;
And faithful souls have yearned to see
On earth that kingdom’s day.
But the slow watches of the night
Not less to God belong;
And for the everlasting right
The silent stars are strong.
And lo, already on the hills
The flags of dawn appear;
Gird up your loins, ye prophet souls,
Proclaim the day is near.
The day in whose clear shining light
All wrong shall stand revealed,
When justice shall be throned in might,
And every hurt be healed.
When knowledge, hand in hand with peace,
Shall walk the earth abroad;
The day of perfect righteousness,
The promised day of God.
Blessing
The blessing of God almighty
The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
be with you all.
Amen.

Opening Responses
O God, come to our aid.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
Psalm 79: God of hosts, bring us back; lead us and we shall be saved.
O shepherd of Israel, hear us, shine forth from your cherubim throne.
O Lord, rouse up your might, come to our aid.
God of hosts, bring us back; lead us and we shall be saved.
God of hosts, turn again, we implore you; look down from heaven and see,
O visit this vine and protect what your right hand has sown.
God of hosts, bring us back; lead us and we shall be saved.
Lay your hand on the man you have chosen, the man you have given your strength,
O Lord, fill us with life, we call on your name.
God of hosts, bring us back; lead us and we shall be saved.
Let us pray
O God, open our hearts
to prepare the way for the coming of Christ.
Instruct us in your ways of compassion
so that we may show your kindness to all the people we meet.
We ask this in the name of Jesus,
the Eternal word,
who lives with you and the Holy Spirit forever.
Amen.
Short reading: Isaiah 45:8
Send victory like a dew, you heavens, and let the clouds rain it down.
Let the earth open for salvation to spring up.
Let deliverance, too, bud forth which I, the Lord, shall create.
Prayers and intercessions
God the Father sent his Son to save the whole human family.
Brothers and sisters, may God’s Kingdom come.
Lord, show us your mercy and love.
Most gentle Father, our voices trustingly proclaim the coming of your Son:
may our actions live up to what we proclaim.
Lord, show us your mercy and love.
You sent your Son to rescue us:
wipe away all suffering from this community
and from the face of the whole earth.
Lord, show us your mercy and love.
May our world be brightened by the coming of your Son;
may it experience more deeply the joy of your presence.
Lord, show us your mercy and love.
In your mercy and love, let us live rightly and well
waiting in joyful hope for the coming of Christ in glory.
Lord, show us your mercy and love.ur Father . . . . . .
O
Clear a pathway, Lord, in our hearts
to make ready for your only Son,
so that when he comes
we may serve you in sincerity of heart.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen.
May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm;
and may he lead us to eternal life.
AMEN

St Leo’s: Feast of the Immaculate Conception 2010
December 8, 2010
A handful of parishioners managed to make their way through the snow and icy roads this morning to celebrate the feast.
We began Mass with the traditional favourite ‘Hail, Queen of Heaven’ and, since there were only eight of us, sang the response to the St Andrew Gloria but spoke the rest of that lovely hymn of praise.
The 1st reading was from Genesis 3:9-15.20 and the Psalm was Noel Donnelly’s setting of Psalm 44
The 2nd reading was taken from the Letter to the Ephesians 1: 3-6. 11-12
The Gospel Acclamation was: Alleluia, alleluia. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Gospel passage was from Luke 1:26-38
Among the Intercessions we included one for Catherine Joyce and all who mourn for her, since her anniversary falls today.
The hymn during the Preparation of the Gifts was ‘Mary, the Dawn and Christ the Light of Day.’

Mother of Christ, our brother, friend and king!
Mother of God, with you to God we sing!
The Sanctus and Memorial were taken from Gerry Fitzpatrick’s Jubilee’ setting, and the Doxology and Great Amen were plainsong.
The Agnus Dei was from the Kelvinhall Mass, and for our Communion Antiphon we used a verse of James Quinn’s ‘This is my Will.’
We concluded Mass with the plainsong hymn ‘Salve Regina’

2nd Sunday of Advent Year A 5th December 2010
| The 2nd Advent Candle: On wintry days, we look on these earthly signs, candles and greenery, and we remember God’s promise to our world: ‘The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and on those who lived in a land as dark as death a light has dawned.’ Christ, our Light and our Hope, has already been among us, and he will return to fully establish his kingdom of justice and peace. In trust and joy, we say: Your kingdom come. Amen |
Penitential Rite: Kyrie eleison . . . . . . . . . . .
Ps 24: Lord, your ways are faithfulness, your ways are love.
Lord, let me know your ways. Teach me the paths to follow.
Make me walk in truth and teach me for you are God, my saviour.
Lord, your ways are faithfulness, your ways are love.
Remember your mercy, Lord, the love you have always shown.
In your love remember me for your goodness knows no limit.
Lord, your ways are faithfulness, your ways are love.
He teaches the poor his way, the humble and those who stray,
For the Lord is good and upright in faithfulness and love.
Lord, your ways are faithfulness, your ways are love.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Prepare ye the way, prepare ye the way, prepare ye the way of the Lord.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

After Christmas. Burns Supper. Date for this is Friday 28th Jan 2011 (tbc). Can we put in appeal here. We have a number of very talented people in the parish who have given generously of their time and wit as speakers at the Burns Supper . It is always difficult to ask the same people every year. So does anyone know of a speaker who could do a turn for us this year ? Could it be you ? Do you have a perfect Immortal Memory squirrelled away which you could delight us all by delivering ? Please have a think about it and get in touch with Father Gerry or anyone from the Social Committee.
