 Priest: Fr Gerry Fitzpatrick

  13th Sunday of the Year C June 27th  2010

Entry:  In the name of God the Father, in the name of God the Son,
in the name of God the Holy Spirit, in the name of God..

Penitential Rite:  Kyrie Eleison,. . . . . . . .

St Andrew:   Glory to God in the highest, peace to his people, peace on earth.

A Reading:   from the First Book of  Kings 19:16. 19-21

Psalm 15:  You show your friends the path of life, give them the fullness of joy.

I say to the Lord : you are my God. Happiness lies in you alone.
He put in my heart a marvellous love, love for the faithful who dwell in his land.
You show your friends the path of life, give them the fullness of joy.

O Lord it is you. my portion and cup, you yourself who are my prize.
I bless the Lord who counsels me, even at night he directs my heart.
You show your friends the path of life, give them the fullness of joy.

My heart and soul rejoice and are glad, even my body shall safely rest,
You will not leave my soul with the dead, nor let your beloved know decay.
You show your friends the path of life, give them the fullness of  joy.

Note:  Psalm 15 : A psalm of confidence and an excellent vocation prayer, a way of reflecting on our vocation as baptised Christians, sons and daughters of God.  We seek refuge in God and ask him to keep us faithful.  With great daring we claim, “My happiness lies in you alone”.  The psalm shows that we can have a special affection for those who share our faith, but we find that those who make ‘gods’ of other things, are people who bring trouble upon themselves.  As we reflect on what we have received, we find ourselves blessing God, our constant counsellor and guide.

  Reading II:  Galatians 5:1. 13-18

Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia.  Speak, O Lord, your servant is listening, alleluia.    Alleluia, alleluia.

 Gospel: Luke  9:51-62

 Preparation  of Gifts:

Christ be beside me, Christ be before meChrist be within me, Christ be below me,

Christ be above me, never to part.

Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand,

Christ  all around me, shield in the strife.

Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my sitting,

Christ in my rising, light of my life.

Christ be in all hearts thinking about me.

Christ be in all tongues telling of me.

Christ be the vision in eyes that see me,

in ears that hear me, Christ ever be.

Jubilee Sanctus and memorial and  St Andrew Lamb of God

       The Invitation:

Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the Banquet of the Lamb. (2)
I am the bread of life, the bread come down from heaven.
Anyone who eats this bread will live for evermore.
Behold the Lamb of God  who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the Banquet of the Lamb. (2)

Blest be the Lord: Canticle of Zechariah: The Benedictus. Tune: Finlandia.

Blest be the Lord the God of Israel,

who came to us; and brought us back from sin.

God raised for us a Saviour who is mighty;

his Saviour-Son from David’s house and line.

God promised this through holy men and women

who spoke for him down through the mists of time.

The Saviour comes to free us from our foes

from evil hands, from those who wish us ill.

So God’s great love for all his chosen people

is thus fulfilled; in these our present times.

 God’s sacred oath his covenant most holy;

is called to mind, his promises made true.

St Leo’s BBQ:  Many thanks to all who made the BBQ such a friendly and successful          event.  Numbers both at Mass and at the BBQ were down because of the ‘Run’ locally.   The Plants brought in £243.10 (tho that includes sales outside the church for the past 2           weeks) and the BBQ itself brought in £175.50 after expenses were covered.

Plants for sale outside the    church -  Thanks very much for all the donated plants.   We         still have lots for sale outside the church – petunias to tomatos!.

Good news is that we have just been certified as a Fair Trade parish!

Our last stall made just over £70.  I think we need a break over summer so suggest no stall in July but start back in August say 15 August if that suits.  Meantime if anyone wants Fair Trade goods, they can contact Fr. Gerry or me.

St. Leo the Great Walking Group                                       June 2010

The walking group has evolved into its current form over a period of about sixteen years. The first walks took place during 1994. They were initially planned on a month by month basis and tended to be restricted to a maximum twenty mile radius from Glasgow.

The Whangie, Mugdock Country Park, sections of the West Highland Way and the walk from Blanefield to Killearn were among the Group’s early attempts. During the winter months, when daylight becomes more limited, the Forth & Clyde Canal provided a number of reasonable walking routes from Old Kilpatrick to Clydebank, Bishopbriggs to Kirkintilloch, and a shorter route from Anniesland to maryhill. . . . ..

Year on year, the Group’s membership grew and with it, the ambition to attempt more testing routes like the unforgettable Flanders Moss and the Greenock Cut. Both in their own way, have ensured a lasting memory within the Group.

The second Greenock Cut walk, attempted in June 1996 is seared in the memory of those who took part.  The first miles outward were promising.  Blue-grey sky, the weather was warm and dry. However, when the route took the Group out above Greenock, the sky became grey; the wind grew in strength and with it came the rain, light at first but becoming in no time, torrential.   The Greenock Cut is a circular walk and the Group had by now reached the point of no return.  The Walking Group, on that day, was made up of some who were experienced but the majority were very occasional walkers who had been persuaded to attempt this one because it was a pretty good, fairly level walk.  The walk continued with the wind strengthening, the rain becoming horizontal and the group, with the exception of the lucky one who had the right waterproofs, becoming progressively more sodden and more and more demoralised.   When shelter was found, all headed for it.     There wasn’t much room;  beneath a narrow bridge over a drainage ditch. The rain was thrown at hunched and soaked backs. Lunch was eaten standing up, with water streaming down hoods and sleeves, diluting tepid cups of tea and coffee and making even more moist sad, damp spam, ham and cheese sandwiches.

This was a quick interlude; there was neither respite nor chat. Onto the path once again and wishing for the walk to finish.   When eventually it did, it was with relief. All, with the exception of one were thoroughly drenched, soaked to the skin.   The rain had penetrated the so-called waterproof outer and all other layers. The boots were like sponges, oozing water; they took over a week to dry properly.  The walkers who had trusted the sweet talk did not return, nor to this day has the Group ever even considered the Greenock Cut.

The first Flanders Moss walk was responsible for the production of the original set of Walking Group Certificates which recognised the grit and determination of those who did this walk.  Bog and burn crossings, log walking and fence climbing tested the Group to such an extent that their efforts had to be recognised, hence the Certificate.    Such experiences were rare and now, such possibilities are remote because the Group as a whole makes the decisions in relation to the Walking Programme.

The programme is prepared at the Planning Meeting held on the third Friday of August. There is a formula for the annual plan. The plan generally consists of six favourite walks, two new walks and two recently attempted walks.  The Group has a walk each month with the exception of the holiday months of July and August.  Increasingly, a preference is emerging for coastal or river walks.

with the dogs at Chatel

lunch break at the falls resting in style at the the Falls

The Group has an important policy of never cancelling a walk, even if the weather is exceptionally poor.  An alternative walk is always available.

The Planning Meeting is an important feature of the Walking Group’s year. All arrangements for the coming walking session, are made at this meeting, with the agreement of the Group.  The walking calendar is prepared, as is the location for the “Wonderful Walking Weekend” and the final major event of the year in June of each year.

The final walk had a barbecue to follow it and the Certificate presentation ceremony. The final walk of June 2010 was on Cumbrae and marked the change from the barbecue to the much more exotic fish tea at Nardini’s Restaurant in Largs.    Twentysix certificates were prepared for the event.

The Wonderful Walking Weekend occurs on the first long weekend of May. Its purpose is to give the Group the opportunity to walk in areas that are beyond reasonable day return travelling from Glasgow.    To date the Group has visited Oban for Iona, Fort William for Ben Nevis, Aviemore for the Caringorms and Pitlochry for Loch Faskally and the River Tummel.

The Group numbers twenty eight in total (2010). There is no compulsion to participate in every walk and likewise there is no prohibition on bringing friends on walks or to any of the Group’s events.  Transport to a walk has never been a problem. Seats are always available in cars.   The usual advice to walkers is to bring a packed lunch, waterproofs, a camera and a friend.   To become a member all that is needed is to be reasonably fit, have a Saturday free once a month. Having a sense of humour is not essential but it has definite advantages.  New members are always welcome.

It has been said that St. Leo the Great Walking Group is the longest running such group within the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Preparation  of Gifts:
as the gifts of bread and wine are brought to the sanctuary we sing: The Canticle from the Letter to the Philippians 2: 6-11

Though  Jesus Christ was in the form of God,
he did not count such equality to be grasped.
Instead, he freely emptied out himself,
and took the form of a servant, was born like us.

In human form he chose humility,
and gave himself up to dying upon a cross.
Because of this our God exalted him, and raised him,
gave him a name above every name.

At Jesus’ name now every knee should bow,
be they in heav’n or on earth or creation’s depths.
