St Andrew Gloria:   Glory to God in the highest, peace to his people, peace on earth..

A reading from the Book of Proverbs: 8: 22-31

Psalm 8
What is man that you should keep him in mind?
Mortal man that you should care for him?

When I see the heavens which your hands have made,
moon and stars and everything which you arranged,
what is man that you should keep him in mind,
mortal man that you should ever care for him?

What is man that you should keep him in mind?
Mortal man that you should care for him?

You have made him little less than any god,
you have blest and honoured him above all things,
you have given him a share in your power,
you have put creation underneath his feet.

What is man that you should keep him in mind?
Mortal man that you should care for him?

 2nd reading : Romans 5: 1-5

Lord, for your faithful people, life is changed, not ended

Day for Life, initiated by the late Pope John Paul II, is the day of the year the Catholic Church in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales
dedicates to celebrating the dignity of human life from conception to natural death.

Day for Life 2010 will help unpack the Church’s teaching on death; it will highlight the
importance of the sacrament of the dying, of praying for the dead and of
accompanying the dying person as they journey towards God. It will also point towards
the presence and consolation of the community of faith and all those who ‘have gone
before us marked with the sign of faith’.

Each year, in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the Bishops’ Conferences work
closely together to celebrate Day for Life. In Scotland the Day is celebrated on 31 May
- The Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. In England and Wales, Day for Life
falls on 25 July and in Ireland it will be celebrated on 3 October.

On this site you will find information, resources, video, podcasts and much more.

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come from thy bright heavenly throne,
come, take possession of our souls, and make them all thine own.

Thou who art called the Paraclete, best gift of God above,
the living spring, the living fire, sweet unction and true love.

 Thou who art sev’nfold in thy grace, finger of God’s right hand;
his promise teaching little ones to speak and understand.

 O guide our minds with thy blest light, with love our hearts inflame;
and with thy strength, which ne’er decays confirm our mortal frame.

Send forth your spirit Lord!  . . . . . . . . . .

You take back your spirit, they die,  return to the dust whence they came.
You send your spirit, create them all, and so you renew,  and so you renew,
renew  the face of the earth.
Send forth your spirit Lord!    . . . . . . . .

 Alleluia, not as orphans are we left in sorrow now;
alleluia, he is near us, faith believes, nor questions how;
though the cloud from sight received him when the forty days were o’er,
shall our hearts forget his promise, “I am with you evermore”?

The Patriarch of Moscow and Pope Benedict 16th   exchanged fraternal greetings last week.

Citing Pope John Paul II’s appeal for Europe to breathe with its “two lungs,” the Pope reflected that “contemporary culture, particularly European culture, runs the risk of amnesia, of forgetfulness and, therefore, of abandonment of the extraordinary patrimony fostered and inspired by the Christian faith.”

“The Christian roots of Europe, in fact, are constituted not only by religious life and the testimony of so many generations of believers, but also by the inestimable cultural and artistic patrimony, pride and precious resource of the peoples and countries in which the Christian faith, in its different manifestations, has dialogued with cultures and art, has animated and inspired them, fostering and promoting as never before the creativity of the human genius,” he said.

The Pope affirmed that these roots are still alive in East and West and “must inspire a new humanism, a new season of authentic human progress, to respond effectively to the numerous and at times crucial challenges that our Christian communities and our societies must face, beginning with secularization, which not only leads to doing without God and his plan, but which ends by denying human dignity itself, in a society regulated solely by egotistical interests.”

“Let us make Europe breathe with its two lungs again,” the Pontiff urged, “let us again give a soul not only to believers but to all peoples of the continent, let us promote confidence and hope again, rooting them in the age-old experience of the Christian faith!”

COMMUNICATIONS SUNDAY: In his message sent to all of Scotland’s 500 parishes for the 42nd World Communications Day, Bishop Philip Tartaglia President of the National Communications Commission of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland claims “a fundamental disconnection between the provider and the consumer” has occurred in the media. The letter which will be read at all Masses on Sunday, 4 May 2008 suggests that “mass communications can fairly be charged with losing the ethical underpinning that once existed”. Bishop Tartaglia points out, “While the last national census showed that over two thirds of Scots described themselves as Christians, few of those who work in radio, television and the press share this identity.”

In response the letter endorses Pope Benedict’s call for “info-ethics”, just as we have bioethics in the field of medicine and scientific research, concluding “Analysing the ethical implications of how information is transmitted would help the media avoid becoming spokespersons for a secular and humanistic agenda. It is crucial that those who work in this field seek to understand the moral and ethical view of humanity shared by those of us who believe in God.”

Make your faith count! (www.catholicvotersguide.org)

A general election has been called. The message the Bishops Conference of Scotland sends you is this: Make your faith count!

The political choices we face today are not the choices your parents and grandparents faced.
They would never have voted for any candidate who refused to protect unborn human life,
who supported experimentation on human embryos, or planned to assist unfortunate people
to commit suicide. They would never have voted for a candidate who would undermine marriage
and family in the way that has happened in recent years with cross-party support. They would
never have voted for candidates who rejoiced in same sex unions. They would never have voted
for candidates who would stop the Church offering adoption services. They would never have voted
for candidates who were clearly hostile to the values they held dear. Your parents and grandparents
voted for those they believed shared the same fundamental Christian values as they did. It is for us
to do likewise to shape a society where the dignity of each individual and life itself is respected.

As Catholics we know the importance of protecting every human life and of the value
that married family life gives to society. These values were once widely shared but
times have changed. Many of those standing for election, of whatever party, do not
share our basic principles and values. That is why we say to you: when you vote,
make your faith count. Vote with your faith to protect human life; to support marriage
and the family; to protect religious freedom; to protect Catholic education. Vote with
your faith, and uphold the right of conscience and religious freedom.

In urging you to let your faith count at the ballot box, we ask you to think carefully before you cast your vote.
Which candidate displays values closest to yours? Which candidate will best respect and protect your religious
freedom and your freedom of conscience? Which candidate do you trust most to do a good job for you and your community?

As your bishops, it is not our intention to tell you which party to vote for. It is our duty to encourage you to engage with
the political process and to vote for the candidate who best represents the values we, like our parents and grandparents
before us, hold dear.

The parish website has been given a face-lift and upgrading – we hope to be able to sustain it with the weekly
bulletin and intercessions, with news of meetings abnd events of interest in the life of the community.
